Wiess, as seen from the 4th floor through a film of condensation due to Houston humidity.
Woke up with an unreasonable need to rearrange the furniture in my room, had my first meal in the servery (+ with a meal plan!), went home for some more things I forgot + another game of 13 Dead End Drive (this time with Leslie), and spent the rest of the afternoon/evening unpacking + setting up for the start of a delightfully promising new year :)
Not too exciting for a first full day on campus, but it’s good to be back.

Dinner with Jennifer and Bo. Bo and I were going for froyo via the Rice Village shuttle, where we met Jennifer who was going to dinner alone since she’s on a gluten-free diet and Chick-fil-A wasn’t gonna cut it. So we decided to join her at Zoe’s Kitchen and we got to learn about Jennifer’s gap year and school/life interests. It was all kind of coincidental but awesome nonetheless.
Earlier today: woke up early to play 13 Dead End Drive with Kiwi, packed/cleaned until way too late, and moved in with the most generous help of Kareem and Mikhail (!)

Hello, ear piercings iii and iv :)
Got these on a whim that I was kind of planning all summer. I was running errands for my mum, and Claire’s was just there, all inviting me to pierce my ear….

Last brunch with the frindles. I’m awkwardly cut off/out of focus, but here’s a group selfie.
Spent the rest of the day pitching DREAM to new students at the career fair (+ seeing so many of my UIers!!) and packing…ever so slowly…

"Who says you ever stop growing?" - Tiffany Kang *
Brunch with the best fronds. Grant writing, grant writing, grant writing… And at long last the draft was done and I could worry about it again in a week. Stuck In Love, bubble tea, and the baseball field by Vivian’s house. I stayed up til 5 that morning making a fire balloon for everyone’s birthdays (everyone’s a summer baby, one for each month) and we lit and released it at the baseball field.
It floated 2 feet off the ground and then burned up.We talked all night— about our summers, our favorite moments, our lowest ones too, and our hopes and fears for the year. I remember feeling unreasonably lonely on the drive home from the baseball field and realizing that I was already missing these wonderful souls that mean so much to me. Couldn’t have asked for a sweeter end to our summer adventures.
*okay, the actual poem uses “we” instead of “you” which makes it much more poignant, but I forgot and misquoted it as I was making the balloon

More cookies from last night— this time with pecans added! Otherwise, a long evening of grant-writing yeehaw.

A selfie because I didn’t take a picture at any other point today. Rachel and David’s last days in Houston —> dinner at our post-docs’ apartment! I decided to make cookies at the last-minute because I liked the circularity of that idea (first week/last week). I was nervous about it being awkward/boring but it was actually a lively dinner with Italian music, “real” pasta, some anisette, stories of Bruna and Francy’s adventures in Houston, and a lot of laughing.
Cameos: my shower curtain, dirty mirror, and dinosaur camera

Babysitting Ella and Elliot while their parents took their older siblings to volunteer at Star of Hope (!). Ugh I am tired and can’t think of more to talk about.

Helped David, Bo, and Fernando move into their home sweet home for the year… with their Gnome Sweet Gnome watching over them from the balcony. No comment.

(Second) dinner, bubble tea, and three summer’s worth of stories to share. The smiles are pretty spot-on about the way I felt about this evening.
